Students with their zeal for
studying abroad and their aspiration for earning a foreign degree are often the
innocent and easy targets for unscrupulous agents who come up with new and
varied methods to fleece them. One such instance is the tuition payment scam
which is targeting the college and university students in the United Kingdom.
It is being reported that the number of instances of this type of scam is on
the rise and at least 600, 00 students who are in UK to pursue their abroad
education are potential targets for these schemes.
What is the tuition payment scam?
Every year thousands of students
descend upon UK to navigate the unfamiliar world of studying in a new country.
They are often unaware of the legal nuances as well as the plethora of options for
financing their studies. This makes them vulnerable and open to exploitation by
fraudulent consultants.
These consultants often pose as
representatives or partners of the university and claim that they can provide
low cost tuition fees to the student if he signs up with them. Some of these
consultants also pose as government authorities and ask the student to pay a
huge amount of fees for their visa under various pretexts. If the student does
not pay up they threaten to revoke his visa and have him deported from the
country. As very often, the student is all alone in the country and his parents
too are not well-versed with the UK law they fall for this scheme and pay up
the money.
How to avoid being scammed?
A number of these fraudulent
consultants even go so far as to
approach the international students in visa lines at the embassy or tuition
payment lines at universities and claim to be representatives of the school
entrusted with the task of collecting payments on behalf of the university. The
gullible students pay up only to realize later that their fees are still
pending and that they have been fleeced. Many of these unscrupulous agents also
send phishing emails to obtain personal information from students and use it to
their benefit. The best option to be safe from scams is to be vigilant and take
adequate precautions to protect oneself. Never share personal information with
strangers whether online or in real life. If you are approached by someone
claiming to be an agent of the university, take his details and then ascertain
the fact with the university by calling their office number as posted on the
website. In case any caller claims to be a visa agent, it is important to know
that, no visa agent will call and demand money. You can verify the veracity of
the caller by calling the visa office helpline and checking facts.
