Student visa scams on the rise in Australia

Australia has seen a marked rise in the number of international student visas which have been cancelled or have been placed under review over the last couple of years. A number of sources have reported a gradual increase in the number of students who arrive in the country purportedly to study but in reality to work or pursue other objectives. The issue has been gaining attention among both the immigration authorities and the mainstream media in Australia, leading to many protests against the corruption that is rampant in the immigration system of the country

Student visa scams – are the students the perpetrators or the victims?

Over the last few years it has been reported that a growing number of student visas have been cancelled on account of accusations of visa fraud. These students have been alleged to have obtained their visas under false pretexts or by providing forged documents. Observations have been made wherein, students aided by agents, take advantage of the existing loopholes in the Australian student visa system and use it to commit visa fraud. The Australian authorities have however begun to crackdown on these fake visa holders and do not hesitate to rescind their visas and deport the students back home. The students who are facing the prospect of the loss of huge sums of money as well as the loss of face, when they head back home to their families, are blaming the consultants for the whole mess, and are accusing them of being fraudulent consultancies. The students claim that they were not aware of the fake documents filed on their behalf by these consultants. While the debate on who is responsible for the fiasco rages on, the government of Australia, has been taking measures to step up its campaign of identifying students who enter the country on a non-genuine intent. The immigration authority has tied up with various tertiary institutes of learning, to help identify students who are pursuing the course with a real intent to study and those who are merely enrolled with a view to gain entry into the country. The Department of immigration and border patrol (DIBP) has clarified that students who indulge in suspect activity or who are found to be not genuine place themselves at risk for deportation. These student’s visas can be cancelled and they could be asked to leave the country. The Council of International Students Australia (CISA) which was formed to look after the welfare of students in the country has also lent its support to this issue and has announced its commitment to identifying and reducing the number of non-genuine students in Australia. Whether it is the fault of the fraudulent consultancies or the student’s themselves, it cannot be denied that an experience of having one’s visa revoked can mar a student for life. The best course therefore would be to do your due-diligence both before and after you sign up with an overseas education consultant. If you are asked by your agent to adopt a course of action that is not clear to you, then do not hesitate to ask questions. All genuine visa consultants will welcome your questions and will answer them to clear any doubts you have. For example, Global Tree counselors have been time and again praised for their patience in addressing queries, by various patrons as can be seen in Global Tree reviews.
